Considered to be the fastest growing region of the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots, the United Inland Membership Group is comprised of three different areas of expertise:

  • Harbor, River and Ocean tugboat industry;
  • Passenger Ferry Systems;
  • and Great Lakes shipping

Harbor and Ocean Tugboat Industry

An Ocean tug and its tow are the deepest draft vessels on the ocean, at times three-fourths of a mile long and with a draft of one hundred feet (to the bottom of the tow wire). Most of the United Inland Membership Group is a part of this assembly, and like our Offshore Brothers and Sisters, are a major source of transporting the many products needed around the world for commerce, medical purposes, sustenance and entertainment. The UIG, which is headquartered in Seattle, negotiates about 30 collective bargaining agreements for the towboat industry alone and covers the areas of Los Angeles/Long Beach, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, the State of Alaska, the Great Lakes states, Baltimore, coastal Florida and Puerto Rico. The largest portion of our ocean-going tugs travels to the Alaskan waters and the Islands of Hawaii; however, during time of war or national need, they have been essential to our armed forces all over the world.

Passenger Ferry Systems

The ferry fleets are the second largest compilation of members in the UIG. Two of the largest ferry systems in the United States are crewed by the membership of the UIG's Pacific Maritime Region, namely the Washington State Ferry System and the Alaska Marine Highway System. In addition, we have Brothers and Sisters employed by Whatcom County Ferries (the Lummi Island Group), Wahkiakum County Ferry System, which traverses between Washington and Oregon, Ketchikan Gateway Borough, Black Ball Transport (between the Olympic Peninsula in Washington and British Columbia), the large Blue & Gold Fleet in San Francisco, and most recently the McNeil Island Corrections Center, located in Washington's South Puget Sound, which also represents Shipwrights and Engine Technicians in this bargaining unit.

The United Inland Membership Group membership area is vast, and the members highly specialized in their individual areas. The diversification of the UIG is part of what makes it one of the most exciting and proud groups of the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots.
